The EcoFishBox™, transport packaging for fresh and processed fish, developed by Stora Enso won the Nordic Scanstar packaging award 2016. The winners were announced in Copenhagen on June 29th. The award-winning box has been designed by Mika Tuhkunen from Stora Enso in Finland. EcoFishBox™ manufactured from renewable wood fiber is an environmentally friendly packaging alternative for the fish industry, where EPS (Extended Polystyrene) packages are widely used today.
Fresh fish packed in ice requires completely leak proof packaging. EcoFishBox’s water resistance is based on the pre-laminated thin PET-film on the liner and Stora Enso's product designer Mika Tuhkunen developed a structure, which makes the package leak-tight.
“Delivered as a flat corrugated board sheet, the EcoFishBox™ takes up seven times less space in storage and transport than the traditional polystyrene fish box. The box can be formed by hand or by machine, and the possibility to print customer-specific images on the box supports brand identity and increases visibility and informativity of the packaging”, says Sales Development Manager Vesa Penttinen from Stora Enso Packaging.
