Brand owners comment Stora Enso’s findings on retail packaging

At the 2014 Pira Packaging Summit in London earlier this month, Björn Thunström, VP Marketing & Customer Loyalty in Packaging Solutions presented how discount retailers can boost sales with innovative packaging based on the findings presented in the latest Viewpoint.

See below the short video from the event which also includes comments from some of the international brand owners and retailers present.

Kevin Vyse, Packaging and Innovations technologist at retailer Marks and Spencer commens: “What I was impressed about with Stora Enso is the amount of innovation…we are always looking for those innovation ideas and for our suppliers to come to us, and vice versa…”.

Björn highlighted how the increase in private label has significantly raised the bar for packaging development and this, in turn, has meant retailers are becoming more involved in development – comments that were reinforced by many of Stora Enso customers and affiliates.

“Packaging optimisation is the key word within our business at the moment…”commented Gordon Henman of Kingfisher, whose company have just begun a global project around the scheme.

Online retailing was another focus point during Björn’s presentation, and he pointed out the potential for growth, and importantly the need to continue to be innovative, by creating more user friendly packaging for consumers – A policy that was supported by Bruce Funnell, head of packaging at Nestle, who commented:

“We have to be careful, in that we act intelligently in the way we respond to the growth of online retailing, by using the right materials in the right way…”
