Redesigning the future with renewable packaging

"Carton of the Year" made from Stora Enso’s board

The annual Pro Carton/ECMA Awards for outstanding carton packaging have been awarded on the 18th September 2014 at the ECMA Pro Carton Congress in Sorrento. Stora Enso’s customers won three prizes, more than any other board suppliers. The Carton of the Year 2014 is a stunning perfume package for Fernanda Brandao, manufactured by Carl Edelmann GmbH from Ensocoat 2S board. The winners of the Most Sustainable carton as well as the Food category used Stora Enso’s CKB board.

The judges were impressed by the superb print quality and holographics of the Fernanda Brandao perfume box, as well as its innovative, asymmetric shape. The judges had not seen such a shape before and praised the looks of the carton, which was also very pleasant to handle. The carton is exceptional and stands out on the shelf in a segment that is highly competitive, said the jury.

“The competition was a great success for Stora Enso again this year. We are very proud of having supplied the board for three award-winning designs, including the most prestigious prize Carton of the Year. It is a masterpiece of beauty and cosmetics packaging, and our Ensocoat 2S has obviously provided a perfect surface for the magnificent print result. The award-winning advent calendar and ice cream box show the versatility of our product range, which offers the optimal choice for different end uses and applications,” says Öystein Aksnes, General Packaging Segment Director, Stora Enso.

Chocolate advent calendar from single material

The Most Sustainable prize was given to Confiserie Reber advent calendar with an innovative carton inlay. The idea was to replace the styrofoam used in the positioning trays of the Reber advent calendars with cartonboard. This was the first time the judges had seen an advent calendar as sophisticated as this. The wells for the sweets are backed with spirally cut cartonboard to hold the sweet firmly in position. After removal of the sweet the section pops up so that the overall look of the box is not compromised. This new system is made entirely of cartonboard and is therefore a remarkable and much easier to recycle after use. The calendar is manufactured by Mayr-Melnhof Packaging Austria from Stora Enso’s CKB board.

CKB gives natural look for an ice cream package

The winner of the Food category, an ice cream snack box from Stora Enso’s CKB board, differs from others through its look and feel. The shape and decoration on both sides of the carton convey a feeling of an exclusive and natural product. The decorative edges have been made by laser cutting. The fibre-based material and skillful techniques have resulted in a more ecologically sustainable and less expensive packaging concept than previously. The package manufacturer is Pringraf and the local board merchant is Cartularia
